Sketching

After sketching a little something every day this month, I've really learned what keeping in practice means. After continual drawing throughout my seven years of college I definitely felt like I took for granted what I needed to do to stay in good shape.

I also learned that I never really found my voice (so to speak) when it comes to sketching/drawing style. With my sister's suggestion, I need to develop and more importantly embrace my style. It doesn't have to match anyone else's and it really shouldn't. I'm going to finish out this month and try to see how I need to continue on my design path. Thanks for following me so far!

My little Sanrio stack

Happy Christmas Eve! I wasn't sure what to draw today and spotted my little Sanrio family of square soft toys and felt they would be a good gift drawing!

Little Piggie Lamp

Many moons ago a certain young man bought a certain young girl a piggie lamp for her birthday. She kept it thinking it was adorable. Little did she know that this nice little gesture would end with a life commitment.

Sweetie

Aw man, the lazy train is hard to get off of! I saw an adorable pic of my dearest Sweetie (german shepard mix) and felt he needed a random dedication.

Love you, Sweetie! You will always be one of my fondest memories - dog or human

Oh the good ole days of Process

If you are a design major then 'Process' will sound very familiar to you. It's one of those important foundation courses we must all take to understand the basics/intricacies of design drawing.

All the angles in which a spherical object will vary in degrees of radial depth based on how far it is from its grounding surface.

Not following? Here's my late night visual!

I've been taken to do many last min sketches to fulfill my December Dailies and I think it's pretty evident where I spend time to do a sketch and where I don't. I did this one at midnight while tilting to one side... Must try more tomorrow!

The Sound of Music

One of my favorites, the classic Sound of Music with the ever so lovely Julie Andrews. Here's my little ode for today :)

I had absolutely no idea that the story is in fact based on a true story! The real Von Trapp family experienced many similar occurrences with what the movie/broadway play showed.

Here is a photo of the actual Von Trapp family singers (found from Wikipedia) This is blowing my mind...am I the only one?

Xmas is coming

We just had our office xmas party today so I decided to dedicate today's sketch to this holiday theme.

We may have also spent a good amount of time decorating stockings. Yay work!

Jimmy's Gourd

You know how there are some days you try and then there are some days you truely don't? Well...

Here's Jimmy's gourd.

Here's my drawing of Jimmy's gourd.

And here's the continual effor of drawing myself. This was a 10 min attempt so for sure it won't look like me and I can spot a million thing wrong with it but oh well! Practice makes perfect!

Behind Enemy Lines

I'm not great at drawing people but here's a beginning try. Sorry Owen, didn't portray you very well.

Strength in Prayer

Close family friends are going through a tough time. I'm not personally religious but I do believe in mental strength. Allow yourself to believe in happiness and positivity. Stay strong.

December Dailies

I have always felt that sketching is very essential to honing your craft. You stop for a bit and you can lose it. Well, enough excuses and let's try to restart this journey.

I'm going to try to draw a quick sketch every day this month, I've been inspired by Olivia from her and her friend Agnes's NanoWriMo/Daily drawings in November to give this a shot myself.

I'm not a great artist, I don't really think I have that unique of an imagination. I can draw what is pre-designed quite easily, think inanimate objects, cartoons, or fruit or shoes or my thumbnail or something... ew..

Anyway, this is the month where I attempt to start drawing again. I'm not really determining a particular theme of what to draw but allow myself to switch from cartoons to realistic renditions, from pen to paint... the goal is to basically try.

Day 1!

Small upgrades

Can it really be the end of November already? We are literally days away (maybe 30+ days but still) from another new year! Whaaaa??

It's time to start the reflection process. You know what I'm talking about, that time when you finally put a stop to what you are doing and think back to what you've accomplished and what you hope to accomplish.

I started making small upgrades at home. First with rearranging my furniture and cleaning more often. Then with finally painting the wall I've been meaning to paint for ages. Then putting up shelves... and finally, reupholstering my chairs.

Simple but big impact.

Boom. It took about $20 to buy the fabric, gather the staple gun/staples, and a few hours to make a small but meaningful change. I think this is applicable to everything in life. A little elbow grease to make a successful change.

I challenge you to try to make little adjustments in your life. Try it! You can't improve if you never start.

TOMS

My Fall/Autumn comfort shoes.

A few months back I was offered a lovely gift from a future family relation and upon receiving it I realized...I need photos!

Lookie lookie at my new TOMS. If you are unfamiliar with the TOMS cause and pledge then please visit their website for more info and please consider supporting this effort.

I don't really have a specific reason for showing as many photos of my TOMS as I am here but they are so adorable and have that little pop of teal or turquoise on the bottoms.

TOMS Teal Pop Herringbone Women's Classics

Comfy? Yes.

Fashionable? Yes but depends

Worth the money? For the cause yes of course..for just the quality of the shoes? No, they will not last you that long but if you consider it a donation with a bonus then you're in the clear. I say if you can afford to buy one then please go and at least try them on. I love mine!

Flowers

I've grown up with my dad always tinkering away in the garden, watering from dawn to dusk and often annoying my mom whenever she had to yell at him for the third time to come in to eat dinner. I have always appreciated the gorgeous variety of colored flowers that populated that little back pockets of the garden. Nowadays I wonder if I could ever recreate such masterful techniques...

Turns out I can't or didn't. R.I.P. lemon tree... but check this flower out!

It lives in the front yard of my house and sits quietly by the door to greet me day in and day out. The only credit I can take is that I water occasionally and I do not tend to set plants on fire. Go me!

It's Autumn again...

I feel like I spend almost 75% of the year waiting for summer to arrive. Once it does, I sweat out all the excitement and after a blink of an eye, it's Fall again. Boo.

BUT this isn't a post to discuss post-traumatic summer syndrome, it's to celebrate the real start to a new season! Hello Autumn, how the heck are ya?

I'm going to try to spend the rest of this month trying to capture some beautiful elements of Autumn... that is, the most beautiful CALIFORNIAN Autumn elements so no snow, still massive sunshine, but my personal interpretation of my Fall. :)

A little positivity for a dull day

Offices.

For the most part offices are bland..stale..confined. There is always an attempt to embellish and add a splash of color but the end result is a mocking attempt to bring happiness to a stark space. But what can we really say? The office is for work, not for play.

It goes without saying that no one enjoys being in an office for 8+ hours, if they say they do then they are lying and you best find another person to talk to because liars are liars are liars!

Well, as a feeble attempt to add a touch of happiness, I tried to bring in a plant. One of those silly $1 (though mine was $2 or $2.50?? what a rip off) plants that you add seeds + water + dirt and sit back to watch the magic happen.

Well, I watched. I watched it flourish for a month or two and then I watched it shrivel and sit there sadly begging me to help. I'm sorry little plant! I watered you and it didn't help! Now this little elefante sits there sadly...and it almost morbidly parallels my excitement for jumping into the working world. Excitement followed by fizzled numbness...sad? A little. Exaggerating? Maybe a little.

BUT! Turns out there is a point to this post.

I bet a lot of you feel the same way. I bet you all are thinking the same thing - work is work is money is work. Survival is key. But whether or not you stick to your boring 9 to 5 or not, just remember that there is plenty of time to also explore your other areas of interest.

I look to those bloggers and vloggers and designers and ...well, many other people who are working in jobs they enjoy and realize it's not a dream. It's a step out into something that may seem uncomfortable and unstable at first but working hard to make that goal into a reality!

I still hope to eventually find an outlet (job or hobby) that can allow me to challenge myself and create work that I love AND make money from it. I haven't found that yet but that will not stop me from trying to find it. Good luck to you if you're on the same boat. No need to bust out those life vests yet, you can still sail through..ok, enough of the nautical themed lessons.

Elefante may be dying a little, but he reminds me to work harder. He also reminds me to water him more without drowning him. Tomorrow's Friday! TGIF and it means another great start to a weekend of possibilities! Positivity can be contagious and I certainly hope this will be. Let's do this!

In other news, my hair is long. Eep.

Happy Slappy Monday

Oh no, is it time already? Does anyone else feel like all our weekends fly by with a blink of an eye before BLAM! Sneaky dreadful Monday returns for its sequel. A terrible continuous sequel...

I may be slightly exaggerating but truth is, Mondays are always the toughest days to pass by. We all just had a delightful two days of sleeping in, walking around comfortably in pajamas, dropping everything to go out for a mid-afternoon outing or coffee/tea dates..

And while realistically we knew we were limited to how much we could do in the span of two very short days, we still act very surprised and tired when we hit the snooze alarm on Monday. And we have no one to blame but ourselves. Why did we stretch ourselves so thin in just two measly days? Why did we think we could recuperate from the tiredness immediately? Why did we think we were invincible?

We aren't. We are but human. And humans hate Monday. The end.

A Baby Shower.

I was always always one of those children who were in a great hurry to grow up and become an adult. Play in the jungle gyms? Please. I would walk the two blocks to buy the daily newspaper and try to read the articles back to back while secretly eyeing the moment I could switch to the comic dailies. I wanted to grow up but I think I wanted to want to more than actually wanting to...get it?

Anyway, I am grown up now and I don't want to keep growing up anymore. Stupid little me, just enjoy and cherish the moment of your youth.

As I grow up, I'm required to do grown up things like paying bills, working jobs, attending weddings, and finally attending baby showers. Speaking of... I attended my first baby shower yesterday!

My eldest cousin announced their exciting little news a bit before the beginning of summer and suddenly growing up seemed more real than ever. Odona and I arrived at the house at noon on Saturday ready to discover what baby showers embodied. Turns out, it's a lot about food and gifts.

Portos goodness

My other cousin (baby daddy's sister) who also happens to be a talented graphics designer, designed the theme and decor for this shower. What's the marvelous theme? Star Wars: Baby Edition! Check out these custom ordered cookies!

My contribution? During the announcement of the baby's gender, they cut open the celebratory cake for all of us (who were dying of anticipation btw) only to find the blue dye had mixed funny and... We all surprisingly found a green cake! Hahah well, I decided to use that little incident in my congrats card!

I enjoy hand writing this font btw!

And there went our first baby shower! I'm sure it's the first of many but I'm glad our first experience was with family! Have a great weekend!
